Influenza Discovery!

A quick blog, because I’m practically beaming…

In my blog on Influenza (https://seussmd.wordpress.com/2010/10/04/influenza-the-flu/), I made some final “non-scientific” remarks, mentioning that I thought it was possible that the influenza vaccine might grant cross-protection with other strains of the flu virus.  As it turns out, I was right!  It’s always fun to be right, especially when people’s health is concerned!

Here is a link to the article (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110110/hl_nm/us_flu_vaccine), showing that some people who were infected with the H1N1 Swine flu now have “Super Antibodies” to many forms of influenza, including all of the forms from the last decade and the Super Flu Epidemic of the 1918 Flu and even one form of the H5N1 Avian flu!

This has led scientists to start working on a “Super Flu Vaccine” that might grant protection from all possible strains of the flu!

So, what is the take home message?  I’m glad I asked!

Get your Flu Shots.  They might just be the secret weapon against the big super flu epidemic of the future!

Good Health!

Preventive Care – An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Prevention of disease is of primary importance to physicians.  Unfortunately, it is usually the lowest priority for patients.  “If it ain’t broke, why fix it!” is the mantra of the majority of people in the United States when it comes to getting preventive care.  As it turns out, it’s a lot of easier to prevent diseases than to try to right the ship once it has already capsized!

So what preventive care should people get and when should they get it? Read more…

I talked about Influenza!  I’m on a quest!  A Mission!  I will make sure that people are educated about the true nature of  “The Flu” and will do my knightly best to get people vaccinated!  All I am missing is a Guinevere or a Dulcinea!  Read more…

Influenza – “The Flu”

Poor Influenza.  So misunderstood!

If I had a nickel for every time a patient walked into my office and said “I’ve got the flu”,….well…..err….well, I’d have a lot of nickels, that’s for sure!

So what is Influenza, really?  I’m glad I asked! Read more…

Vaccine Autism Debate – Part 2, the follow up

A new study in the respected medical journal, Pediatrics, has found no connection between the preservative Thimerosal and autism.  Many of the vaccine naysayers pointed to Thimerosal as the autism culprit when multitudes of studies showed no connection between autism and vaccines.  All studies on Thimerosal have failed to show a link.  This new one is the biggest one of the bunch. Lights, Camera…Action!

I just finished taping my first TV show.

Wow.  That sounds cool.

Ok, to be clear, it was a local cable channel, so it’s more Wayne’s World, and less Oprah, but it was still exciting to do and I’m very proud that they asked me to do it.  The show is called Contempo and runs on local Comcast Cable in the northern Illinois region. Read more…

Asthma – To Wheeze or Not To Wheeze

This is a big important topic for some people.

Thankfully, it is a non-essential topic for most people!  Unlike high cholesterol or high blood pressure, the majority of people will never have to worry about asthma.

So what exactly is Asthma?  I’m glad I asked! Read more…
